Session 1: Respiration and Phonation for CCM Singers

July 13-15, 2019

Taught by Matt Edwards with Wendy LeBorgne and Marci Rosenberg.

This course explores the view that correcting faults at the vocal fold level will release other entaglements in the mechanism. Topics include:

  • Developing the "Mixed-Voice"

  • Fundamentals of Belt technique

  • How to produce a healthy Belt

  • Separation and development of heavy and light mechanism

  • How variations of airflow affect vocal quality

  • Applying exercise physiology principles to voice training

Session 3: CCM styles and Performance Practice

July 19-21, 2019

Taught by Matt Edwards with special guest Dr. Ysaye Barnwell, long standing member of Sweet Honey in the Rock and Shari Sanders author of Rock the Audition

This course covers topics that are essential for singers who have mastered the basic technical concepts introduced in sessions I and II. Topics include:

  • The technical ingredients of vocal styles

  • The rhythmic and melodic ingredients of vocal styles

  • Audio technology

  • Storytelling techniques

  • And round-robin sessions on

    • How to apply functional training in the choral setting

    • How to prepare singers for the recording studio

    • Tips for working with musical theatre performers

    • How to audition for pop/rock musicals.

Session 2: Resonance and Articulation for CCM Singers

July 16-18, 2019

Voice Anatomy Lab Session

A hands-on continuing education course examining vocal anatomy and physiology. This course features: 

  • cadaver lab dissections

  • state-of-the-art MRI imagery

  • 3-D modeling of the vocal tract

Musical Theatre Singing Styles

July 19-21, 2019

This course covers the CCM styles found in musical theatre and performance practices that are essential for musical theatre singers today.  It will enhance your performance skills in providing skill training essential for you and your students' success in the industry.  Topics include:

  • Explore through songs various styles. 

  • The vocal ingredients for various styles

  • How to apply the use of vocal stylisms (bends, cry,  fry, growls, onsets, slides, etc.) while maintaining healthy vocal function.

  • How the larynx, soft palate, tongue, jaw and lips function in various styles.

  • Treatment of vowels and consonants. 

  • Tools for acting the song borrowed from traditional acting approaches
